Global Learning
Fairtrade and international recognition
We are very proud to be a Fairachiever School, having achieved our Fairtrade Schools Award in 2007. We also hold the International School Award (ISA). Global learning is embedded in our school curriculum and drives much of our educational philosophy.
Our Link with Mrawi Primary School, Tanzania
Our connection with Mrawi Primary School in Tanzania began in 2001, and over the years, it has developed into a valuable and enduring global partnership. Located on the outskirts of Moshi in northern Tanzania, Mrawi Primary School serves students aged 8 to 15. The school shares many similarities with ours, including its rural setting, making the connection even more meaningful.
Initially, our link with Mrawi was built on written correspondence and annual fundraising efforts aimed at providing teaching supplies and resources. However, as a school, we were eager to deepen our collaboration and create a truly global partnership where we could exchange ideas, best practices, and foster a shared sense of learning.
Thanks to the support of the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms project, we were able to take our partnership to the next level. In 2015, staff members from High Hesket had the opportunity to visit Mrawi, and later that same year, teachers from Mrawi visited us. These visits have since continued in 2018 and 2020, allowing us to build a valuable international community. Through these exchanges, both our schools have learned from one another, and our children have actively engaged in developing their global citizenship.
This ongoing partnership remains an invaluable experience for both our school and Mrawi Primary, with its importance woven into our school’s curriculum. We are excited to see it continue to flourish, fostering mutual respect, cultural exchange, and collaborative learning.
Further Global Activities and Initiatives
In addition to our partnership with Mrawi, we are continually developing our global initiatives beyond the curriculum. We have collaborated with the Cumbria Development Education Centre (CDEC) on various projects, participated in Youth Climate Change activities, connected with international teaching resources and engaged with national platforms and utilised the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to consider our role in climate, environmental, and global issues.
For us and our pupils, a key part of global learning is keeping things current and contributing to change. We encourage our children to actively engage with news and events, whenever possible, to help shape a better future.
