English

What are we aiming for?

At High Hesket CE School we aim to foster a love of reading, writing and discussion through an inspiring, varied and creative curriculum. We support children to become fluent and confident in their reading, writing and verbal communication, providing engaging experiences in each of these areas in order to promote enthusiasm and enjoyment towards their learning. Our use of high quality texts stimulates children’s desire to read widely and often, both for their own pleasure and to enhance their learning around a broad variety of themes. We strive to progressively build upon children’s understanding of the world around them by enriching their vocabulary and understanding of information across different contexts, including by connecting to their natural world.

Literacy is embedded throughout our curriculum by ensuring these skills are utilised and applied for various purposes. We believe in the importance of developing children’s written and oral skills to ensure they have the ability to communicate for a range of purposes and audiences during their time in education and beyond. The connect, stretch and transfer process is adopted through the use of a cold to hot writing method, which allows children the opportunity to be reflective and conscientious writers. Children are encouraged to take pride in the presentation of all that they produce and they understand the importance of neat and clear handwriting. They adopt a range of learning behaviours in order to develop a breadth of key skills in their reading, writing, speaking and listening and are encouraged to reflect upon how these behaviours assist them in becoming deeper, more efficient learners.
