History

What are we aiming for?

At High Hesket CE Primary School we aim to develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of local, British and world history, including knowledge of key events, dates and characters. Alongside this, using our curriculum drivers, we endeavour to promote and shape children’s curiosity and fascination within historical enquiries. Children are encouraged to identify the tools they will need to enquire successfully through questioning, historical ‘experts’, visits and primary and secondary sources. Learning experiences are planned to be sequenced, vocabulary rich and cumulative, promoting children’s interest, stretching their thinking and allowing them to transfer and apply their knowledge, skills and understanding. An awareness that knowledge of the past derives from a range of sources and that interpretations and conclusions can be different is important. Our children are encouraged to foster their critical thinking when checking the accuracy of interpretations, using evidence to support their arguments.
